etsy and crafty
etsy.com is an eBay for artists (of all kinds, and I mean all) to sell their work. They have a feature that lets you search for local designers, so at 3:46 AM, prime time for searching the web for useless hand-made items that I definitely won't buy, but can definitely cash a few hours skimming through, it occurred to me that I can at least pretend to justify this waste of my time by sharing it with you guys.
That was a little harsh, in reality, Etsy is a great resource for art to hang on your walls, wind chimes made of recycled bottles, needlepoint pictures of Basset hounds, ugly jewelry, and a freakishly high number of cupcake related things. Instead of wasting your time as well, I used their shop local feature and sifted through to find a few cool things from local Miami vendors.
for some reason, people who sell crafts love to write things in Spanish on pretty paper. I've seen similar work at the Brooklyn Flea Market, another haven for handcrafted useless stuff that I want really really badly, but since this artist (papersquid) is from Miami I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she has at least a Tia that doesn't speak English, plus it's all eco cotton no-tree paper. That's right, no tree paper kids that just the type of stuff on Etsy.
This comes from vendor JamesAnthony who seems to have an obsession with phrenology and 18th century human anatomy, luckily so do I. At $58 I scoff at the very notion of posting this shirt on her, but there was so much ugly crap that I posted this cute shirt even though it's over priced.
I really hate the font that Sugar Chills chose to use for their logo, but there was no way I could pass on posting something called "Face Slime" and not just any face slime, but number 8. It uses botanical oils and other funky stuff that we know is supposed to be good for us like "anti-oxidants."
I liked this guys (dannybritto) because he has a funny e-mail "holler@dannybritto.com," this painting is called "lesbian braided couple," and he is also selling a vintage men's YSL vest.
And... that's it. not very much good stuff to be honest, and I'm a craft-a-holic, I love to buy stuff other people don't want and try to sell, but Miami is being repped pretty lazily on the Etsy scene (or at least the last 100 people to update their stores) so come on kids! Get crafty! Resell some of your stuff! Make the Miami Etsy search a little prouder than the bleak turn out of tacky earrings and cupcake crap.
