orchid: there are pasties aplenty
we love a good pop up. When the pop up includes pasties, fire breathers, fried chicken and booze - all the better.
, "Miami's Most Erotic Theatrical Experience," is right off the main stretch of the Design District. There's one week left to see this sparkly burlesque show.
Orchid's space, a theater, plaza and restaurant, don't look or feel "pop up." The trendy word gets thrown around nowadays as an excuse to half execute events in random spaces; not at Orchid. The theater has seats around the thrust stage (technical term for a stage with a runway jutting out) and is lined with, a bar, and booth seating. Nothing about it feels like the space was constructed right before Basel and will only last till January 6. Ditto for the restaurant, made to feel like an old carousel repurposed into a Michelle Bernstein pop up spot serving her famous fried chicken and a really tasty prefix menu. The only giveaway that this won't be here forever? The plastic plates and utensils for eating dished by a James Beard winner.
Go see Orchid for a night of something different. Have a few drinks before, go with a good buzz on and kick back to enjoy a fun night. It's not the quality of performance you'll get at the Arsht, but it's not meant to be. There are boobs, there are cover songs, there's a strange storyline that you don't actually have to pay attention to, there's a really impressive contortionist that opens the show and mild audience interaction - plus strip teases. It's a generally good time that falls somewhere between the best cruise ship show you've ever seen and a way better option than almost anything else around.
