su-shin izakaya iz legit
we've been trying to work up a good argument for dubbing Miami the best sushi city in the country. We haven't quite crossed our t's and dotted out i's on that one yet, but Su-Shin Izakaya is a good place to start. This tiny sushi dive on Aragon, in Coral Gables, is as legit as they come.
After several recommendations from a Japanese artist and Taiwanese co-workers, a friend suggested we drop everything and pick up some chopsticks.
The staff has a kind of Asian T.G.I. Friday's for your birthday circa 1998 vibe. Walk through the doors and the sushi chefs behind the bar and all the servers turn to you with a cheery hello. If you're one of those people who enjoys it at Coldstone when they sing for tips, you'll love this. And don't worry, they do it on your way out as well.
That's the only characteristic that Su-Shin Izakaya shares with a megachain. A small restaurant, that seats no more than a hundred, the food is the real deal here. How real? Well, the specials lining the walls (including vegetable croquettes! Japanese goes Miami.) are translated into Japan and we get a feeling that it's necessary given the crowd of Japanese-by-way-of-Miamians.
