that's nice 6. a turband man.
Designer David Acosta is selling Spandex, just the way we like it- everywhere, that is. He's even coined a new term for the stretchy, turban, headbands. What David Acosta of Gold Saturn thinks is nice:
You're website says that you see Gold Saturn as more of a visual diary than a clothing line. What's going on in your diary now that we can expect to see in the clothes soon?
Gold Saturn is my little visual diary that I translate onto ready-to-wear. It's literally my sketch book come to life, and its a natural offshoot of my personality.
As far as graphics, I'm really inspired by the Church right now- religion and the art and design that goes along with it: stained glass windows, intricate crosses, lots of black. I'm also really digging exotic animal prints like snakeskin, peacock... I'm feeling very animalistic right now.
The bodysuits have been doing amazing! In the future I do plan on taking an even further departure from the standard t-shirt and introduce new styles and accessories that help define Gold Saturn as more of a lifestyle brand: hooded sweater dresses, scarves, beach blankets. Of course everything will be super soft, cheeky, and graphic.
Why did you chose the Everglades for your look book location? Did you get eaten alive by mosquitoes?
The Everglades was literally born to be photographed. Not only is the landscape breathtaking, but the restaurants, pit stops, everything looks like a movie set. When I scouted the location I knew immediately I had found the perfect spot to shoot. We did not get eaten by mosquitoes, but we did almost get eaten by a few gators! When we were shooting on a bridge, there was a few of them lingering down below trying to come up. I thought one of the models Caroline, would be scared, but she was loving it! She was fiercer than the gators.
Can you describe your perfect Gold Saturn/Miami girl? Does she exist in real life?
The Gold Saturn girl is not a wallflower by any means. My designs can be risque, and at times tongue-in-cheek. One thing is for sure- they are great conversation starters. And yes she does exist in real life- there is a little Gold Saturn in every girl! Some more than others.
You know how we love to dress up around here, why no fancy night dresses?
Gold Saturn is all about being effortless and comfortable. Everything is super soft, cotton, and graphic based. Don't expect me to make red carpet gowns any time soon.
Growing up in Miami, you kind of of grow up super fast. I was going to clubs when I was 14, and had a fake i.d. that said I was 26- and I looked 12! Miami plays a huge inspiration for me not only in the design context, but in the fit, cut, and fabric selection. Everything is super soft and thin. I use a lot of white, especially against colorful graphics.
Do you have any secret vintage spots that you can share?
It's no secret but one of my favorite vintage spots is C. Madeleines in Aventura- it's my favorite place to shop in Florida. It's not like thrift shopping though, because literally every piece in the store is amazing. I shouldn't even call it a store because it's not- its a museum.
Tell me about the turbands.
I coined the term "turband" by combining the words turban and headband. Turbans have been around for ages. During the 1950's in Miami Beach, woman would lounge poolside in turbans, oversized jewelry, and cocktails in hand. I like to think of my version as a more wearable youthful approach to the accessory. The Gold Saturn turband comes in various fabrics and styles: velvet, embellished, studded. This spring I'll be coming out with a lace turbands- they are so sick!
Ok, last question. Chongas. If you could give some advice to all of those lip liner wearers out there what would it be?
I would tell them that if drawing their eyebrows with sharpie markers makes them happy... DO IT! Just don't ask for my honest opinion...
